Abacus 200000

On July 28, I peeled out of Salt Lake City on my way to Jackson, WY. I’d spent the last few days trying to find a place to live. There weren’t that many options and the houses that were available were well overpriced. The rental market in Salt Lake, at least in the Sugarhouse area, has surged out of control in the last few years.

The Abacus has served the last 8 years as my faithful boogie van. Before Salt Lake, we traveled from Las Vegas, San Francisco, Bishop CA, back to Jackson and out to Denver after originating in Phoenix for this July’s King of the Road derby.

Shortly after departing Salt Lake on the 28th, a major milestone was reached: Abacus 200000

I’m hunkered down at Spark Jackson Hole where I can get some real focus on the projects I have in the works. Sticking to a tight daily budget has been essential on this trip: no luxury accommodations in Jackson for me. Camping under the Grand is just as good as any five star hotel.

A message from the bears

The bears in California are smart. Not only did they figure out how to speak exceptionally articulate English, but they also commissioned this sign for the Mono Pass trailhead.

We were excited to read the explanation of what could happen if you went ahead and drove away from the pump with the nozzle in the gas tank. This has been a constant fear I’ve had since I started driving. I’m glad to hear that some gas stations have gone ahead and posted the exact cost of replacing the parts in such an event.

Today’s Belichick Press Conference Highlights

The media may think he’s a bore, but this is hallarious. Especially when it’s been asked and answered so many times that you already know what he’s going to say:

Q: I know you enjoy talking about injuries, so I’ll ask about one.

BB: Thank you.

Q: What is Mike Wright going through in terms of dealing with the concussion?

BB: He goes through whatever the trainers do with him. I don’t know; I’m not a trainer. We have injuries. The trainers treat the injuries based on the symptoms and what the treatment is and how all that works and what the process is. That’s what medical people do.

Q: Glad we could end on a high note.

BB: Yep. Thanks for asking that.

Pro Ski Coach going into Maintenance Mode

It’s a mantra among technology startups. If what you’re doing isn’t working, kill it. Take the lessons that you’ve learned, move on, get better, iterate, release, repeat.

I’ve been trying to grow a community at Pro Ski Coach for a few years now. For reasons beyond my control, it’s been wildly successful.

In other ways, it’s been a miserable failure.

PSC is one of the highest hit water ski related websites. Ofcourse, we all stand way back in second place to Water Ski Magazine, whose summer time traffic totals inbetween 15 and 25 thousand unique visitors per month.

While PSC can make a dent in those numbers, I just have a feeling it can’t grow any further than that.

Some skiers just don’t want coaching. Other skiers dont get to ski enough to be interested in coaching, or even talking directly about water skiing techinque or theory enough to join a website community based on that.

SO kill it. Fail.

Pro Ski Coach will stay up, I have the domain name reserved for the next 9 years or something rediculous, anyways.

But I’m not going to keep pouring my heart and soul into building it up, trying to make it into something that it will never be.

I’m turning my attention to develop a Social Network for Water Skiing and Wakeboarding. Hopefully we can execute on the wakeboard end… but we’ll see.

In just a few short days, we’ve already managed to attract enough new users to wetJacket to convince me that this is definitely the right way to go. The most satisfying part is that we’re growing again at a rate that we never have before, and most of these new members were never involved in PSC.

So I’ll keep working on it. Thanks for reading.
